Pipeline reads pull in three directions: hygiene (the data is current), diagnosis (this deal is stuck because X), and forecast (we'll close $Y this quarter). LLMs are very good at the first, useful at the second, and still bad at the third without your rep-level commit context.

Salesforce State of Sales 2026: 64% of enterprise reps now use an AI assistant for call summaries; 22% of managers report it improved their next-quarter forecast accuracy. Improved — not solved. The base-rate floor is still your historical win-rate by stage.

Where LLMs actually help forecasting

Three real wins: (1) extracting the next step from call notes (was the meeting agreed? what was the deliverable?), (2) flagging deals where rep commit and activity contradict, (3) generating the rep-level forecast challenge questions you'd otherwise have to write fresh each week.

Where they make it worse

LLM-summarised call notes give a deal the appearance of progress when no real movement happened. The summary is smooth, the rep nods along in commit, and three weeks later the deal slips. The fix is structural: anchor the AI to verifiable next-step artefacts (signed agenda, returned email, calendar invite), not to call sentiment.

Lead qualification reframed

Inbound lead scoring with LLMs is now table stakes — vendor tools route ~70% of qualified leads to the right rep within 60 seconds. Where the human still wins: the live discovery call where you watch the prospect react, surface the unspoken objection, and decide whether this is really an opportunity or a wishful enrolment.

What to delegate first

Reversible work with bounded blast radius: deal-stage hygiene checks (does Stage 3 have a verbal commit recorded?), pipeline cleanliness scoring, weekly forecast challenge prep. Save your hours for the deals at risk and the reps who are forecasting from hope rather than evidence.
